Ed Hardy Clothing
Ed Hardy clothing has taken the street by storm. The vibrant colors and designs of his tattoo inspired art are amplified when printed on fabric, and only lose a touch of aggression when compared to having them right on your skin. So who is this Ed Hardy? How was he able to elevate tattooing into the realm of fine arts and high end urban fashion?
Don Ed Hardy is an American tattoo artist who started his trade in Southern California in the late ’60s. After getting his BFA degree in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute, he spent some time in Japan, where he learned the traditional Asian art of tattooing from a master there. Hardy is credited with being the first American to incorporate the aesthetics of Asian tattooing into his work.
Hardy and his wife published a series of books under the name of Hardy Marks Publications, including the five volume series Tattootime. Hardy Marks Publishing also published other tattoo art books that played a large part in drawing attention to tattoos as art.
Hardy Life LLC was formed to manage trademarking of his images after the success of a clothing line launched with Ku USA. In 2004 Christian Audigier got the rights to market Hardy’s work and almost overnight celebrities were popping up everywhere with bright colored dragons and skulls on their shirts, pants, shoes and everything else. Since then, Ed Hardy clothing has kept its momentum as one of the edgiest, yet most popular, clothing brands today.
As for the creator of Ed Hardy Clothing, he spends his time concentrating on his fine art pursuits like printmaking and porcelain painting. Hardy still manages Tattoo City, located in San Francisco, in addition to curating art shows and giving lectures at museums and non profit organizations.
