2004 the french designer Christian Audigier licensed the rights of Don Ed Hardy to produce the Ed Hardy clothing line. All the clothings produced are based on Hardy’s tattoos. Prior to the Ed Hardy clothing label, Christian Audigier was for example the Head Designer at Von Dutch, which is named af the motocyclist Kenny Howard, whose daughter sold the rights on his nickname after his death.

At Ed Hardy Audigier attempts to replicate the marketing techniques employed by Von Dutch. He does his marketing directly to celebrity clients and openes luxurious stores in high profile fashion districts. And guess what? It works like a charm!

Don Ed Hardy is not just the man who gave his name to the brand, his work also inspires all the freaky motives and designs of the Ed Hardy shirts and accessoires. Donald Edward Hardy was born in 1945 in Southern California. In 1967 he became a professional tattoo artist. Since then he doing tattoos, drawings and painting.

Parts of his life he lived in Japan which is clearly visible in his designs. He now lives with his wife in Honolulu, but still manages the most famous tattoo studio of San Francisco: Tattoo City.

Christian Audigier

Audigier was born in Avignon, France. He wanted to become a rock musician, but he soon realized that he wasn’t talented enough, so he concentrated on designing stage outfits for his musician friends. That’s how one of the most impressive fashion careers of the modern times began. Christian Audigier now own more than 10 brands - most with big success. Ed Hardy in other countries

The Ed Hardy fashion line is a worldwide success. It’s known in a lot of different countries. There are official Ed Hardy stores in Australia, Dubai, Japan and Europe besides the US located stores in New York, Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Especially in Germany Ed Hardy is really big. It’s famous becuase of the TV-show Germanys Next Topmodel, which is a pendant to Americas Next Topmodel and hosted by Supermodel Heidi Klum. With the candidates they visited Ed Hardy stores in both seasons. The other Audigier brands are also well known but by far not as successful as Ed Hardy.
